About Rome Township
Rome Township was named in 1834 and organized in 1835 by settlers including Lyman W. Baker, David Smith Jr., John B. Schureman, Theodorick Luther, and Joseph M. Baker. The name came down to a close vote: Baker proposed "Rome," Smith countered with "Junius," and Rome won by three.
Schureman hosted that first meeting in his own home and became the township's first Supervisor; Luther, James Allen, and John Bates served as its first assessors. The Bradley, Knapp, and Hubbard families settled alongside them, arriving from New York State in the early 1830s like most of Rome's first residents.
