Rome Township was named in 1834 by Lyman W. Baker and was organized in 1835. The first settlers were the Baker's, Smith's, Schureman's and Luther's. Other early settlers were the Bradley's, Knapp's, Hubbards, and Joseph M. Baker.

The population of Rome Township was 1,772 at the 2000 Census. According to the United States Census Bureau, Rome Township has a total area of 35.9 square miles.
